As excited children jostled for a better view of Santa at Augusta’s annual Christmas Light Up Spectacular in 2017, one of the most visible and important milestones in the downtown’s redevelopment was about to occur. High above the crowd, timed to illuminate simultaneously with the holiday lights below, two 18’x18’ Augusta University shields came to life on the former Wells Fargo Building. The move, facilitated by Blanchard and Calhoun Real Estate Company’s commercial division, signaled to the community that the city’s namesake university had the confidence and vision to join other forward thinking risk takers like TaxSlayer in the redevelopment of downtown Augusta. When Blanchard and Calhoun was established 100 years ago, the founders ran the business out of one small downtown office – and, they never left. They still maintain offices in the building now known as Augusta University on Broad. “It’s a premier building in downtown Augusta,” says Davis H. Beman, vice president and director of Blanchard and Calhoun’s commercial division. “We are thrilled it will bear the name ‘Augusta’ for years to come.”
